IMAGINE TOI - Imagine!

by and with Julien Cottereau
staging Erwan Daouphars
artistic collaboration Fane Desrues
light designer Idalio Guerriero
sound manager Ariski Lucas

A drop of water is heard falling, then nearby footsteps... and it all begins! Amid noises and whistles, a character bursts onto the scene who appears to be a mixture of Buster Keaton and an overgrown Pinocchio. Gentle and naïve, with his too-short trousers and funny hat, Julién starts sweeping the stage when he discovers himself being watched by the audience. No stage set-up or special effects are required, let alone props: if he needs something, he can invent it!

With simplicity and grace, Julién Cottereau brings to life a world of monsters and princesses, tenderness and emotions. A poetic show suitable for all ages that celebrates the joy and wonder of being a child, Imagine-toi brings out the child in all of us!

LA PIÙ STRANA DELLE MERAVIGLIE

written and directed by Roberto Mercadini
production Sillaba

‘But this is the strangest of wonders!’ says Horatio to Hamlet, after seeing the king's ghost.
Roberto Mercadini tells us about Shakespeare, his time, his theatre, the astonishment and dismay he feels in the face of this titan, using the same words he makes his astonished and dismayed characters utter. That is to say, Shakespeare with the phrases he used to talk about us all. Those phrases that already seem to say everything. And in front of which one sometimes thinks, ‘the rest is silence’ (which, for
precisely, is another phrase from Shakespeare).

Four characters lead the audience to play a crazy game of a strange and innovative game of the goose, whose goal is the final square of suicide. A conductor involves the spectators in advancing three human pawns on the board: a PhD student, a precarious worker and an intern will go through unforeseen events, collective rehearsals and individual trials with a tight comic rhythm and improvisation pieces based on inputs from the audience. The one who manages to accumulate the most jinxes and therefore the most ‘discomfort’ will win.

A show of cynical collective self-analysis that cuts no one any slack: irreverent, comical and profound, it forces us to come to terms with the world we have built and the life we would like.

Not being able to have a son who can carry on the family name has become an obsession for the old and greedy Messer Nicia. He gives himself no peace: he is willing to do anything to have an heir. But not to the point of having to die. If, however, it can be someone else who sacrifices himself, everything changes. Thus begins a mockery with a Boccaccio flavour, in which those who think they are clever will be tricked by those who really are.

STRIGHE MALEDETTE!

with Sara Allevi, Anna De Franceschi, Eleonora Marchiori, Maria Luisa Zaltron
written and directed by Marco Zoppello

It is 1518, in Edolo, in the Camonica Valley, when a terrible drought, combined with a disease that kills men and animals, throws the village into total chaos. The villagers are exhausted, the strighe have struck again! Tired of fòter and balar with Beelzebub in the meadows of Mount Tonale, they have descended to the valley to spread their mephitic dust on men and flocks.
Four women are found guilty of such crimes and, pursued by the enraged populace, find refuge in the burgomaster's palace.

The four women: a healer, a prostitute, a noblewoman and a peasant girl, are interrogated at length by the inquisitor, but none confesses. Yet among them is hidden at least one witch! The people tremble, anger mounts and boils among the people, the measure is full. The crowd shouts their names: they are donna Laura from Urbino, Maddalena Bradamonte, Aurora de Rubeis and Orsolina Toni ‘the redhead’. By tomorrow morning, one of the four must hand herself over to the secular arm for justice to be done. One night to decide which of the four must sacrifice herself for the others. One night to find a scapegoat. One night to decide which of the four unfortunate ones will have to be burnt alive in the public square.

BUFFONI ALL'INFERNO

Deep in the wastelands of hell. A quiet, eternal day of agonising torture. Suddenly there is a loud howl, it is the devils of malebranche running from one side to the other in search of their king: the terrible Satan. A thousand thousand souls have suddenly arrived on the banks of the Styx, carried off to the other world by a fulminating bubonic, smallpox, murderous and cowardly plague. Hades is suddenly clogged and Minos, merciless judge of souls, is forced to make immortal leaps to examine everyone's faults. Operations are slow, the spirits protest, insults and some nasty blasphemy fly. Beelzebub, with profound wisdom, offers a discount to the souls of three jesters, Zuan Polo, Domenico Tagliacalze and Pietro Gonnella to return to doing what he did best in life: entertaining. The show draws on the ancient art of the jester, the entertainer par excellence, the most devoted devotee of sneering.

Travelling parade

with the participants of the workshop L'arte del Buffone
directed by Michele Mori and Marco Zoppello

At the roots of Renaissance theatre and the Commedia dell'Arte we find some hybrid figures of performers, soloists of the actor's art employed in the role of square and palace entertainers. Their repertoire was vast and articulated: they danced, disguised themselves as women, acted and sang in falsetto, imitated sounds, noises, the voices of animals, men, women, children and foreigners, and combined this with obscene gestures, jumps and acrobatics. Each participant would build his or her own speaker, starting from the individual skills of each, aptitudes for movement, singing, dancing, dialects, playing an instrument. In popular theatre, each person makes the most of his or her own qualities, unravelling them, exploring them and bringing them to life on stage. Starting from Maestro Dario Fo's lesson, we will try to pursue the idea of a layered popular theatre, sacred and profane, universal and for this very reason able to speak to everyone.

ATTACCHI DI SWING

with Alessandro Mori and Corrado Caruana

Music and comedy are the ingredients of this show to make people laugh, to ‘deepen’ the history of music, to introduce them to music that travelled the world on a carriage,
to make a manouche and swing party with the duo formed by Alessandro Mori, a clarinettist devoted to comedy, and Corrado Caruana, a virtuoso guitarist who scales the keyboard with the
sanguine gypsy jazz spirit.

A 1930s drawing room, soft atmosphere, the grand soiree is about to begin. On stage the virtuosity of the manouche guitar of Corrado Caruana (Django's Fingers) and the eclecticism of Alessandro Mori (Teatro Necessario) on clarinet. A swinging `jazzigano ́ duo that absorbs the rhythmic-harmonic elements of jazz and French Valse, enriched by improbable surprise instruments and a loop station that synthesises and amplifies the fun. The pace picks up during the musical journey, made up of great music, toasts, surprising anecdotes... A continuous crescendo of humour and surreal events, exploding into a myriad of musical instruments. An irrepressible duo for two hours of pure fun, musical virtuosity and comedy.

Three great women, two world wars, a thin fil rouge uniting them: one name, one destiny.
Letizia goes to war is a tragicomic tale of tenderness and truth. Three women of the people, irreparably overwhelmed by the war in their daily lives, who find themselves turning their lives upside down and performing, in the name of love, small great acts of courage. The first Letizia is a young bride, who left Sicily for the Carnic front during the First World War, in the hope of finding
her husband Michele. The second Letizia, on the other hand, is an orphan brought up in Littoria (Latina) by nuns and only recognised by her aunt after she comes of age. She arrived in Rome at the time of Italy's entry into the Second World War. Finally, Sister Letizia, an elderly sister of Venetian origins and brusque manners who, having taken her vows late in life, will prove to be the surprising trait
d'union of the destinies of these women who are as distant as they are united.

FULL METAL GINGER

by and with Anna De Franceschi
original music Michele Moi
direction Susi Danesin

production Stivalaccio Teatro in co-production with Roerso Mondo Ass. Cult. / Silent Sardinia Festival 2021 with the contribution of Fondazione Sardegna

The performance recounts the typical day of an atypical person: Ginger, a full-time clown who every day adapts to life in the modern world. Ginger experiences the different moments of everyday life and struggles to conquer her place in the world. A victim of the rhythms imposed by modern society, our heroine will confront with her irreverent and naive style the situations that we too often accept without giving them much thought. The performance, lasting about 25 minutes, uses clowning, mime and slapstick techniques. The multiple situations and settings will be evoked solely by the actor's flair and supported by a timely sound dramaturgy that the audience will hear through wifi headphones. The sound environment thus becomes the predominant instrument to make this show an immersive and all-embracing experience, projecting the spectator into the story. The show plays on various reading levels so as to be suitable for the whole family and winks at sacred monsters of visual comedy such as Chaplin or Lewis. Will our Ginger be able to survive the wear and tear of modern life? We will only find out by laughing, at her, but also a little at us.

RADIO CLANDESTINA

a performance by Ascanio Celestini
based on the text by Alessandro Portelli ‘L'Ordine è già stato eseguito’ (The Order has already been carried out)

A woman approaches and asks someone to read her the signs on which is written fittasi and vendesi. The woman is illiterate. Someone answers her that ‘nowadays you are a rarity, but during the war there were many people who could not read. And many went to the Iris cinema at Porta Pia to my grandfather Giulio to have the German proclamations read out in the newspapers'. On 25 March ‘44 they had one read out announcing the death of 320 people: it was the massacre of the Fosse Ardeatine. ‘This of the Ardeatine is a story that one could tell in a minute or in a week. It is a story that begins at the end of the nineteenth century, when Rome becomes the capital, and continues in the years when the suburbs are built, continues with the war in Africa and Spain, with the racist laws of ‘38, with the second war, until the bombing of San Lorenzo, until 8 September. It is the story of the occupation that does not end with the liberation of Rome. It is the story of the men buried by tons of earth in a quarry on the Ardeatina and of the women who went looking for them, of the wives who worked in the 1950s and of the children and grandchildren who still tell that story.

The novella of ‘Cupid and Psyche’, composed in his Metamorphoses by Apuleius in the 2nd century A.D., tells of a troubled love hindered by the diversity of the two loved ones: Cupid is a God while Psyche is a mortal, but beautiful as a Goddess. A saga of characters that divide Olympus from Earth, gods from mortals, only to discover that there is not so much difference. Daria rewrites the myth of Cupid and Psyche, adapting the narrative to the actor's craft. A bare scene that comes to life through the power of vocal and body language, such as to create settings and share suggestions to lead the audience into an imaginative world and, through the art of theatre, to find themselves.

ANDROMACA

from Euripides

a performance by I Sacchi di Sabbia and Massimiliano Civica
with Gabriele Carli, Giulia Gallo, Giovanni Guerrieri, Enzo Iliano
production Compagnia Lombardi-Tiezzi in co-production with I Sacchi di Sabbia

Taking advantage of Neoptolemus' absence from home, on his way to the temple of Apollo, a furious quarrel breaks out between the members of his family: his young wife Hermione is jealous of the slave girl Andromache, with whom Neoptolemus has fathered a child, and wants to kill her and the child at any cost. Her father Menelaus, who has come expressly from Sparta, is determined to help his daughter in her project of revenge, just as Peleus - Achilles‘ father and Neoptolemus’ grandfather - is determined to stop her. Andromache finds refuge at the altar of Thetis, and there, clinging to the statue of the goddess, she takes her time waiting for her lover to return. Neoptolemus - the great absentee - is the centre and cause of the various clashes that animate the story: each character makes decisive choices for his or her life, convinced that on his or her return, the lord will bring justice. But, at the end, a messenger recounts a horrible fact: Neoptolemus died soon after leaving, before any dispute and discussion had even begun. Andromache is a text in which hopes alternate with tragic disillusions, in a mechanical dance so macabre and ruthless as to seem comical.
